The state reported 2,396 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, tally reaches 56,845
A record 33,231 samples were tested on Saturday taking the cumulative tally to 8,61,211 till date.
Tamil Nadu on Saturday reported its highest single-day spike in new Covid-19 cases as its tally reached 56,845.
The state reported 2,396 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours. Of these new cases, 64 are those who came to the southern state from either abroad or other states. 14 passengers who came from Oman tested positive for the virus and 17 passengers who came from Delhi and 12 passengers from Maharashtra who came by road and train also tested positive.
Saturday was the fourth straight day, Tamil Nadu reported more than 2,000 new coronavirus cases. Currently, there are 24,822 active cases in the state while death toll reached 704 after 38 more fatalities in the last 24 hours.Chennai continued to clock a majority of the cases among districts with 1,254 today, pushing the overall tally to 39,641.
As many as 1,045 were discharged on Saturday, taking the total number of recoveries to 31,316 in the state.
On the positive side, the state tested 33,231 samples on Saturday, which is the highest number of Covid-19 tests conducted in a single day in Tamil Nadu. Total 8,61,211 samples have been tested for the virus till date, said State Health Department.
As lockdown without relaxations continued for day two in Chennai, Chief Minister Palaniswami described it as a 'speed breaker', saying the curbs were being used to further augment detection of Covid-19 cases in Chennai by conducting more door-to-door surveys and fever camps. All measures are in place for both early identification and treatment of people who test positive, he told reporters after inspecting quarantine amenities at Guru Nanak School in Velachery. The 12-day lockdown, which came into effect on Friday, is being implemented in Chennai and in parts of neighbouring Chengelpet, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur. Only essential services are allowed and vegetable shops and groceries can function only from 6 am to 2 pm.
